Michigan Majors
Ken Wyatt Captures his 11th MMBA Title at Thunderbowl Lanes
The Budweiser Michigan Majors Bowling Association’s opened its 47 th year of tournament action at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park on January 11 th . Hall of Famer and Executive Director Ken Wyatt of Sterling Heights started off his 30th year of MMBA competition in style winning his 11 th title, defeating Craig Nidiffer of Trenton 238-209. Wyatt received a check for $1,000 along with the championship trophy while Nidiffer settled for 2 nd place and received a check for $500. Wyatt paced the field of 52 bowlers with a six game qualifying round of 1467. The cut score to make the 14 man semi-final round was 1273. This month’s tournament featured Kegel’s Broadway lane condition, part of Kegel’s Challenge series. This lane pattern proved to be a good test for all of the players. The stepladder finals began with fifth seed Justin Neiman of Warren facing fourth seed Mike Bradfield of Lansing. Bradfield, bowling in only his 2 nd MMBA tournament, showed no signs of being nervous as he defeated Neiman in a tight match 226-225. Neiman had a chance to close out Bradfield with three strikes in the 10 th but left a pocket 7-10 on his second ball to finish with 225. Bradfield needed to fill at least 19 pins to close out the match and did just that with a strike on his first shot in the 10 th and filling 9 on his next two shots. Neiman received a check for $300 with his 5 th place finish. Bradfield then met fellow Lansing native Robert Mireles. Mireles struggled to find the pocket, opening with splits in the 3 rd and 5 th frames while Bradfield was solid the whole game defeating Mireles 227-155. Mireles, owner of 3 MMBA titles, received $350 for his 4 th place finish. Next up for Bradfield was qualifying leader Ken Wyatt. This was a great match as both players were in the pocket all game long. Wyatt used a six bagger in frames 5 through 10 while Bradfield failed to strike on the left lane twice down the stretch, losing 249-237. Bradfield received a check for $400 for his efforts. Wyatt then met 2011 Bowler of the Year Craig Nidiffer. Nidiffer, already with 8 MMBA titles in his young career, started the match slowly, failing to strike until the 5 th frame. Wyatt started the match with a spare and three strikes, taking an early 38 pin lead. Nidiffer threw strikes in frames 5 -7, however failed to strike in the 8 th and 9 th frames leaving the door open for Wyatt. Wyatt closed the door with a three bagger in frames 6-8 to go on and win 238-209. Thank you to Tom Strobl, proprietor of Thunderbowl Lanes, and General Manager Charlie Cassise along with the rest of the staff for again opening a new season for the MMBA. We’re proud to have Budweiser as our major sponsor. A big thank you to A.J. Mathews and West Side Distributing for sponsoring another successful tournament. REGGIE GREEN TRIUMPHS OVER RECORD FIELD
Takes the DV8 New Year's Countdown title
with final frame victory over Amii Friesorger
CONGRATULATIONS TO REGGIE GREEN for defeating the biggest DV8 Shootout field in history as he took the New Year's Countdown title at Colonial Lanes in Ann Arbor. 118 bowlers went to the starting gate, and when it was all over Reggie stood alone as our newest Champion! He earned $500, the title, some stiff bragging rights, and that very valuable Bye into the match play rounds of August's Grand Finale with the $1,000 first place guaranteed by Maplewood Lanes. He didn't shoot really big scores but he did keep hanging on to squeak though most of his matches and stay in the hunt, most of his victories were less than 10 pins. He just kept going until there was nobody else left. That was some Damn Good Bowling, Reggie!!!
CONGRATULATIONS ALSO TO AMII FRIESORGER for making it all the way to the title match after just barely making the cut - for the very first time after many tries. Sporting a mere 150 average she definitely had the crowd behind her as she kept marching through the match play, including a heart-stopping one pin victory over Ron
Laurain in the Round of 8. In the championship match, the larger than normal crowd was hootin' and hollerin' for every good shot she made. She needed two strikes in the 10th frame to defeat Reggie, but the first one went right through the nose. That crowd exploded in cheers for both bowlers in appreciation for a great performance by them, and Amii was consoled by a nice $300 payday for her second place finish. Where else can a 150 bowler experience such a thrilling day as she
enjoyed? Only in the DV8 Rondot's Pro Shop Shootout Series. That was also some Damn Good Bowling, Amii!!!
A Very Happy New Year to Jo Kangas! After helping out on the Shootout Staff for years Jo finally cashed in with the lucky ticket and won the DV8 Dude that was so generously donated by DV8 Bowling. As with every shootout, the proceeds from the ball raffle supplements our Grand Finale prize fund. Make sure you get the necessary three tournaments in this season to be eligible for that Grand Finale!!!!
THE NEXT DV8 SHOOTOUT is the annual Superbowl Shootout at Maplewood Lanes in Saline on February 2nd. Like our Turkey Shoot, this event is a perennial sellout. We have changed the start time from noon to 11 AM in order to accommodate 108 bowlers instead of the previous 96 and still give everyone time to enjoy their plans for the Big Game afterwards. Early entry is virtually mandatory, especially if you wish to bowl with family/friends on the same lanes. When we have 108 entries submitted with the $40 entry fee, we will start a waiting list. Avenues for entry are outlined on the Facebook event page:

Thanks to everyone who came out to make this our biggest Shootout ever!
And we hope to see you at Maplewood on Super Bowl Sunday.

Michigan Majors
The Budweiser Michigan Majors Bowling Association’s traveled to Sterling Lanes on February 15th. Hall of Famer and Executive Director Ken Wyatt of Sterling Heights followed up his win at Thunderbowl in January with another victory at Sterling Lanes, winning his 12th title defeating Frank Snodgrass of Roseville 244-235. Wyatt received a check for $1,000 along with the championship trophy while Snodgrass settled for 2nd place and received a check for $500.
Jeff Edwards paced the field of 57 bowlers with a six game qualifying round of 1497. The cut score to make the 14 man semi-final round was 1339. This month’s tournament featured Kegel’s Sunset Strip condition, part of Kegel’s Challenge series. This lane pattern was a little more forgiving that last month’s condition and Brian McMahon took advantage with the only 300 of the tournament in the first game of qualifying.
The stepladder finals began with fifth seed J.R. Raymond of Bay City facing fourth seed Carleton Chambers of Detroit. Raymond struggled early with opens in frames 3 & 4, however still had a chance to make the match interesting in the 10th with a double. Raymond went high leaving the 6-10 spare ending his day with a 181-173 loss. Raymond received a check for $300 with his 5th place finish. Chambers then met qualifying leader Jeff Edwards of Sterling Heights. This match was tight all the way. Edwards had a chance to put Chambers away in the 10th with a mark and good count, however, Jeff went through the nose leaving the 4-6 split. Chambers stepped up with a chance to win with a double and got the first strike but went high on the second leaving the 6-10 spare. Chambers needed both pins to tie and was able to convert, leaving the match tied 216-216. In the 9th & 10th frame roll-off Chambers was able to throw a double in the 10th and win 49-40. Edwards, last year’s defending champion and owner of 2 MMBA titles, received $350 for his 4th place finish.
Next up for Chambers was Frank Snodgrass of Roseville. Snodgrass jumped out to an early 25 pin lead. Chambers tried to close the gap late, but he left an 8 pin in the 9th frame which ended his run at the title. Snodgrass went on to 211-195 victory. Chambers received a check for $400 for his efforts.
Snodgrass then met top seed Ken Wyatt. This match looked like it might be a runaway early as Snodgrass opened in the 4th frame and Wyatt striking in six of his first seven frames. Snodgrass battled back into the match throwing a 5 bagger in frames 5-9. Wyatt spared in the 8th & 9th frames and threw three strikes in the 10th to finish with 244. This meant Snodgrass could win the match with a double in the 10th. Snodgrass through the first strike but left a ringing 10 pin on the second shot. Wyatt survived to win 244-235.
Thank you to Dave Tomaszewski and the rest of his staff at Sterling Lanes for their hospitality. Thank you to our Budweiser sponsor Petitpren Distributors for sponsoring another successful tournament. Again I would like to recognize our newest MMBA sponsor General Maintenance Works - thank you MMBA member Bill DeFrance.
Our next tournament will be held at Mayflower Lanes in Redford on March 15th& 16thwith a start time of 10:00 a.m. This is our annual Match Game Championship, the first leg of the MMBA triple crown. The entry fee for this tournament is $100.
